Konnichiwa, it’s Chika Sensei.

Today, I’m sharing a practice from my exclusive course. This one’s for beginners (JLPT N5)! Can you answer correctly?

[Practice Question]

今さいふに200円(____)ありません。

*いまさいふに200えん(____)ありません。

1 しか
2 だけ
3 ごろ
4 あまり

[Answer]

今さいふに200円(1 しか)ありません。

I only have 200 yen in my wallet now.

Both しか~ない and だけ mean “only”, but there is an important difference:

しか~ない emphasizes that the amount is very little or not enough. It is always used with a negative sentence.

だけ is neutral and does not carry a sense of limitation.

e.g.

200円しかない
I only have 200 yen. (I think it’s not enough.)

200円だけある
I have only 200 yen. (No judgment about the amount.)

In this sentence, the speaker feels that 200 yen is too little, and the sentence includes the negative form ありません, so しか is the best choice.

Other choices:

だけ can mean “only,” but 「200円だけありません」 would mean “Only 200 yen is missing,” which changes the meaning.

ごろ means “around that time”

あまり(~ない) means “not very much” or “not often”

a rule, data, or standard.

I hope this explanation helps! 😊
