[Answer]
祖母は耳が遠い(4 ものの)、一人で生活はできるようだ。
Although my grandmother is hard of hearing, it seems she can live on her own.
「〜ものの」 means “although” or “even though.”
It shows that what follows is unexpected or different from what is usually expected.
In this case:
祖母は耳が遠い
→ we might expect that she can’t live alone.
But the sentence says she can, which is unexpected.
So, ものの is the best choice.
Other Choices:
わけで
= “because,” “for that reason”
ところで
= “by the way” or “now, speaking of something else”
こととて = “because ~ (so it can’t be helped)”
A very formal expression used to justify something.
These three do not express contrast or unexpected results,
so they are unnatural in this sentence and cannot be used.
I hope this explanation helps! 😊
