[JLPT grammar] The sentence after a cause “〜て” must be a result.

Today I am going to share the homework correction quoted from my JLPT N4 course!
The student’s sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student’s sentence]

となりの音がうるさくて寝ません。

*となりのおとがうるさくて寝ません。

[My correction]

となりの音がうるさくて寝ません。
→となりの音がうるさくて寝られません
I can’t sleep because of the noise from the neighbors.

The te-form indicates a reason or a cause.
The first part of the sentence “となりの音がうるさい(the noise from the neighbors)” explains the cause of the second part of the sentence “寝られません(potential form, negative; I can’t sleep)”.
In other words, “寝られません” is the result of “となりの音がうるさい”.

“寝ません” is your willingness to say “I will not sleep”, not the result of the noise from the neighbors.
So you should say it using the potential-form., “寝られません=I’m in a situation where I can’t sleep due to the noise.”

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊

In the JLPT course, all lessons come with homework, if you submit your homework, I will reply with corrections.
