[JLPT grammar] Avoid Using Support Verb 終わる with Natural Phenomena

Today I am going to share the homework correction quoted from my JLPT course!
The student’s sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student’s sentence]

雨が降り終わったようです。

*あめがふりおわったようです。

[My correction]

雨が降り終わったようです。
→雨が止(や)んだようです。
It looks like the rain has stopped.

The support verb 終(お)わる indicates that the act of ~ends, but is not used when talking about natural phenomena. This is because natural phenomena are not actions that humans can control.

e.g.
◎雪(ゆき)が止むまで待ちましょう。
(×雪が降り終わるまで待ちましょう。)
Let’s wait until the snow stops.

◎太陽(たいよう)が沈(しず)みました
(×太陽が沈み終わりました。)
The sun has set.

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊

The above correction is just a taste of what my JLPT all-in-one course has to offer (today’s is from the N3).
