[JLPT grammar] Conjugating i-adjectives in Past-Tense Polite-Style: 寒いでした or 寒かったです?

Today I am going to share the homework correction quoted from my JLPT course!
The student’s sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student’s sentence]

きのう、雨がふって寒いでした。

*きのう、あめがふってさむいでした。

[My correction]

きのう、雨がふって寒いでした。
→きのう、雨がふって寒かったです
It rained and was cold yesterday.

寒い is an i-adjective. When we conjugate it to the past-tense polite-style, it should be 寒かったです, but not 寒いでした.

寒い i-adjective
寒|いです non-past, polite
寒|かったです past, polite

〜でした is used for na-adjectives and nouns past-tense polite-style.
e.g. 先生(せんせい noun)でした, 親切(しんせつ na-adj)でした

e.g.
東京(とうきょう)の夏(なつ)は、暑(あつ)かったです
Summer in Tokyo was hot.

レストランのワインは高(たか)かったです
The wine at the restaurant was expensive.

コンサートは楽(たの)しかったです
The concert was fun.

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊
