[JLPT grammar] Don’t use 〜ぱなし verbs represents a change

Today I am going to share the homework correction quoted from my JLPT course!
The student’s sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student’s sentence]

お菓子を食べすぎて、太りっぱなしです。

*おかしをたべすぎて、ふとりっぱなしです。

[My correction]

お菓子を食べすぎて、太りっぱなしです。
→ お菓子を食べすぎて、太ってしまいました
I ate too many sweets and gained weight.

The expression 〜ぱなし (leave on, leave out, leave as is) indicates that a situation continues; however, 太る (to gain weight) represents a change in weight gain, not a continuous state. Therefore, it is not appropriate to use 〜ぱなし with the verb 太る.

Here are some example sentences where 〜ぱなし can be used.

窓(まど)を開(あ)けっぱなしで、外出(がいしゅつ)してしまいました。
I left the window open and went out.

昨日(きのう)は6時間(じかん)も運転(うんてん)しっぱなしで疲(つか)れました。
I was tired from driving for 6 hours straight yesterday.

田中(たなか)さんの話(はなし)は面白(おもしろ)くて、笑(わら)いっぱなしでした。
Tanaka-san’s talk was so interesting that we couldn’t stop laughing.

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊
