Today, I’m sharing a homework correction from my JLPT Course. This one’s for beginners! Can you spot the mistake in the student’s sentence?

 

 

[Student’s sentence]

 

田中さんが私の妹にネックレスをあげました。

*たなかさんがわたしのいもうとにねっくれすをあげました。
Tanaka-san ga watashi no imouto ni nekkuresu o agemashita.

[My correction]

 

田中さんが私の妹にネックレスをあげました。
→ 田中さんが私の妹にネックレスをくれました。

Tanaka-san ga watashi no imouto ni nekkuresu o kuremashita.

Tanaka gave a necklace to my younger sister.​​

 

 

あげる vs くれる

*GIVER is the subject

 

くれる (kureru) is used when the receiver is you or your family.

[giver] は/が [receiver (speaker/speaker’s family)] に [object] を くれる

 

あげる (ageru) is used when the receiver is someone else, or when you or your family are the ones giving something.

[giver (other)] は/が [receiver (other)] に [object] を あげる
[giver (speaker/speaker’s family)] は/が [receiver (other)] に [object] を あげる

 

In this sentence, since the receiver is your younger sister (a member of your family), you should use くれる.
