こんにちは、ちか先生です。

Konnichiwa, it’s Chika Sensei.

Today, I’m sharing a homework correction from my JLPT Course. This one’s for beginners! Can you spot the mistake in the student’s sentence?

[Student’s sentence]

コーヒーや紅茶、どちらがいいですか。

*コーヒーやこうちゃ、どちらがいいですか。
ko-hi- ya koucha, dochira ga ii desu ka.

[My correction]

コーヒー紅茶、どちらがいいですか。
→ コーヒー紅茶、どちらがいいですか。
ko-hi- ka koucha, dochira ga ii desu ka.

Would you like coffee or tea?

〜 (ya):

Use や when listing two examples out of three or more possible options. It implies the list is incomplete.

e.g.

ケーキやアイスやチョコが好きです。
ke-ki ya aisu ya choko ga suki desu.
I like cake, ice cream, chocolate, and so on.

〜 (ka):

Use か when offering two specific choices and asking someone to pick one. It is used for “or.”

と (and) can also be used to connect items, it emphasizes inclusion rather than offering a choice.

If you want to indicate that only one choice is possible strongly, 〜か〜 is better.

In this sentence, since you’re asking someone to choose between coffee or tea, か is the correct choice.

I hope this explanation helps! 😊
