Konnichiwa, it’s Chika Sensei.

Today, I’m sharing a practice from my exclusive course. This one’s for upper beginners (JLPT N4)! Can you answer correctly?

[Practice Question]

これは先生が私に(__)日本語の本です。

*これはせんせいがわたしに(__)にほんごのほんです。

1 あげた
2 やった
3 くださった
4 さしあげた

[Answer]

これは先生が私に(3 くださった)日本語の本です。

This is a Japanese book that my teacher gave me.

くださる is the respectful expression(尊敬語 そんけいご) of くれる.

It is used when the giver is someone you respect (e.g., a teacher, boss, or elder).

The receiver of くれる/くださる is always “私”, and it expresses gratitude for the kindness shown to me.

Sentence structure:

[giver] が 私に [object] を くれる

[先生(giver)] が 私に [日本語の本(object)] を くださった(respectful, past)

My teacher gave me a Japanese book.

先生が私にくださった

The Japanese book my teacher gave to me.(Noun modification)

Other Choices:

あげた(あげる)

→Used when you give something to someone.

やった(やる)

→A casual form of あげる

さしあげた(さしあげる)

→ A humble form(謙譲語 けんじょうご) of あげる

These three words (あげる, やる, さしあげる) are used when you (or someone in your in-group) are the giver.

You cannot use them when you are the receiver.

I hope this explanation helps! 😊
