Konnichiwa, it’s Chika Sensei.

Today, I’m sharing a practice from my exclusive course. This one’s for intermediate learners (JLPT N3)! Can you answer correctly?

[Practice Question]

寒い季節は風邪を(__)なので、気をつけてください。

*さむいきせつはかぜを(__)なので、きをつけてください。

1 ひきぎみ
2 ひきがち
3 ひききり
4 ひきかけ

[Answer]

寒い季節は風邪を(2 ひきがち)なので、気をつけてください。

Since people tend to catch colds in the cold season, please be careful.

〜がち means “tend to ~” or “something happens often”

It’s usually used for negative things.

The sentence is talking about something that happens often in the cold season:

catching colds frequently.

So, the correct answer is: ひきがち = tend to catch (a cold)

Other Choices

〜ぎみ = “a bit”, “slightly”

e.g.

風邪(かぜ)ぎみ = I feel like I’m catching a cold

→ But it doesn’t mean “often.”

〜きり = “only” or “just”

→ But “ひききり” is not a real Japanese expression.

〜かけ = “started doing ~ but didn’t finish”

e.g.

風邪をひきかけ = just started to catch a cold

→ This also doesn’t mean “often.”

I hope this explanation helps! 😊
