こんにちは、ちか先生です。

Konnichiwa, it’s Chika Sensei.

Today, I’m sharing a practice from my exclusive course. This one’s for upper beginners (JLPT N4)! Can you answer correctly?

[Practice Question]

この自転車は大学に行く(__)使います。

*このじてんしゃはだいがくにいく(__)つかいます。

1 には
2 でも
3 のに
4 しか

[Answer]

この自転車は大学に行く(3 のに)使います。

This bicycle is used to go to the university.

This 〜のに  means:

“for the purpose of ~” or “used for ~.”

[Connection]

Verb (dictionary form) + のに

大学に行く+のに

→ used for going to university

旅行(りょこう)をする+のに

→ used for traveling

資料(しりょう)を作(つく)る+のに

→ used for creating documents

Here, the speaker wants to say:

“The use of this bicycle is to commute to university,”

so you should choose のに.

[Other Choices]

〜には

→ Means “considering…” or is used for emphasis.

“大学に行くには…” means “Considering that you’re going to university…”

But here, we’re talking about purpose, not condition or emphasis, so it doesn’t fit.

でも

→ Means “but.”

でも is usually used at the beginning of a sentence.

〜しか

→ Means “only” and is used with negative verbs.

But this sentence is not negative.

I hope this explanation helps! 😊
