こんにちは、ちか先生です。

Konnichiwa, it’s Chika Sensei.

Today, I’m sharing a practice from my exclusive course.

This one’s for intermediate learners (JLPT N3).

Can you choose the correct answer?

[Practice Question]

大変だ。台所のガスの火が(__)っぱなしだ。

*たいへんだ。だいどころのガスのひが(__)っぱなしだ。

1 つけた

2 つけ

3 つける

4 つけて

[Answer]

大変だ。台所のガスの火が(1 つけ)っぱなしだ。

Oh no! The stove in the kitchen is still on!

〜っぱなし

Leaving something in a certain state (usually a bad or careless one)

Verb masu-form stem + っぱなし

つけ|ます

つけ|っぱなし

つけっぱなし means:

The gas is still on (and it should have been turned off!)

Other Choices:

つけた → ta-form (past tense)

つける → dictionary form

つけて → te-form

Only the masu-form stem fits.

So, つけ is the best choice.

I hope this explanation helps! 😊
