[Answer]
I thought I’d go to bed early yesterday, but I had trouble falling asleep.
To express your intention or decision, use:
Volitional-form of a verb +
= “I thought I would…” or “I intended to…”
In this sentence, the speaker wants to say:
“I thought, ‘I’m going to sleep!’ but I couldn’t fall asleep.”
That’s why 「寝よう」 is the correct choice.
Other options:
Imperative (command) form. It does not express the speaker’s own intention.
〜つもり already means “intend to” or “plan to,” similar to 〜と思う.
You cannot use both together.
Correct example:
〜てしまった expresses something already finished or completed.
I hope this explanation helps! 😊
