Today, I’m sharing a practice question for JLPT prep.
This one’s for pre-advanced learners (JLPT N2)!

階段で転んでスマホが壊れたが、けがをしなかった(3 だけましだ)。
I fell on the stairs and broke my smartphone, but at least I didn’t get hurt.
〜だけましだ
= “It could have been worse,” or “At least…”
〜だけましだ is used to find a “silver lining” in a bad situation.
It focuses on the fact that a much worse outcome was avoided.
In this sentence:
Bad situation: Your smartphone broke.
The “good” part: You didn’t get injured.
That’s why だけましだ is the best choice here.
✖ Other choices:
〜にちがいない
= “I’m sure that…”
〜というものだ
= “It is natural that…” / “That’s just how it is.”
〜ではいられない
= “I can’t help but…”
