Today, I’m sharing a practice question for JLPT prep.
This one’s for beginners (JLPT N5)!
Can you choose the correct answer?

A：ここには何を書きますか。
B：何も（＿＿）。
*A: ここにはなにをかきますか。
B: なにも（＿＿）。
1 書(か)きました
2 書(か)きませんでした
3 書(か)いてください
4 書(か)かないでください

B：何も（4 書かないでください）。
A: What should I write here?
B: Please don’t write anything.
何も＋negative form
= “nothing” or “anything”
何も always needs a negative form!
Let’s check the choices:
Positive forms:
書きました (wrote)
書いてください (please write)
Negative forms:
書きませんでした (didn’t write)
書かないでください (please don’t write)
So, the answer must be 2 or 4.
Now, let’s look at the conversation:
A asks: “What should I write here?”
B needs to give an instruction or answer.
書きませんでした
= “I didn’t write”
→ This is just stating a past fact. It doesn’t answer A’s question.
書かないでください
= “Please don’t write”
→ This is an instruction.
That’s why the correct answer is 書かないでください.
