[JLPT N3] Even though you can’t: できない+[くせに・あげく・なんか・わりに]?

できない(?)できるなんて言わないほうがいいよ。

1 くせに
2 あげく
3 なんか
4 わりに

You can’t do it, so you shouldn’t say you can.

こんにちは、ちか先生です。

Konnichiwa, it’s Chika Sensei.

Today, I’m sharing a practice question for JLPT prep.

This one’s for intermediate learners (JLPT N3)!

Can you choose the correct answer?

[Practice Question]

できない(__)できるなんて言わないほうがいいよ。

*できない(__)できるなんていわないほうがいいよ。

1 くせに

2 あげく

3 なんか

4 わりに

[Answer]

できない(1 くせに)できるなんて言わないほうがいいよ。

You can’t do it, so don’t say you can.

〜くせに

= “even though ~” / “despite ~”

〜くせに is very similar to 〜のに.

But 〜くせに carries a strong feeling of blame, criticism, or annoyance.

In this sentence:

You cannot do it.(できない)

But you say you can.(できると言う)

→The speaker is annoyed. That’s why we use くせに.

So, できないくせに is the perfect fit.

✖ Other Choices:

2 〜あげく

= “after doing ~ for a long time, (bad result) happened”

“できないあげく” sounds unnatural.

3 〜なんか

= “like ~ / things like ~” (often looking down on it)

“できないなんか” is not natural here.

4 〜わりに

= “for ~, (it’s unexpected)” / “compared to ~”

できないわりに sounds like: “Even though you can’t, you can do it (surprisingly).”

I hope this explanation helps! 😊
