[JLPT N2] Not only the driver:

Konnichiwa, it’s Chika Sensei.

Today, I’m sharing a practice question for JLPT prep.

This one’s for pre-advanced learners (JLPT N2)!

Can you choose the correct answer?

[Practice Question]

[Answer]

Drunk driving puts not only the driver but also other people in danger.

= “not only ~ but also ~”

ばかりか is often used together with (also) or さえ (even) in the second part of the sentence.

Here, the in「ほかの人々を」(also other people) is a big hint!

= not only A, but also B

= Not only the driver, but also other people…

So, ばかりか is the correct answer.

✖ Other Choices:

だけに

= “because… especially”

If you use this, it means “especially because they are the driver.” It sounds unnatural and does not work with も.

わりに

= “although / considering…”

This shows contrast. It does not fit here.

というと

= “speaking of…”

This is used to bring up a topic. It does not fit this sentence.

I hope this explanation helps! 😊
