This one’s for pre-advanced learners (JLPT N2)!

よっぱらい運転は、ドライバー（3 ばかりか）ほかの人々をも危険にさらす。

Drunk driving puts not only the driver but also other people in danger.

 

 

 

〜ばかりか

= “not only ~ but also ~”

 

〜ばかりか is often used together with も (also) or さえ (even) in the second part of the sentence.

Here, the も in「ほかの人々をも」(also other people) is a big hint!

 

A ばかりか B も

= not only A, but also B

ドライバーばかりか、ほかの人々をも

= Not only the driver, but also other people…

 

So, ばかりか is the correct answer.

 

 

✖ Other Choices:

だけに

= “because… especially”

If you use this, it means “especially because they are the driver.” It sounds unnatural and does not work with も.

 

わりに

= “although / considering…”

This shows contrast. It does not fit here.

 

というと

= “speaking of…”

This is used to bring up a topic. It does not fit this sentence.
