Is there a difference when we use「〜から」and「〜んです」 [JLPT grammar]

こんにちは!ちか先生(せんせい)です。
Konnichiwa! It’s Chika sensei.

Today I share my reply to a student’s question in the JLPT All-in-One course.
I hope you will find it helpful!

〜んです|(explanation, reason) JLPT N4 Course

[A student’s comment]

Is there a difference when we use「〜から」and「〜んです」in a sentence to give a reason?

[Chika Sensei’s reply]

こんにちは。
Yes, they both indicate reasons, but the emotions they contain are a bit different.

〜んです
Explanation of the situation
Used when you “want to be heard more” or “want to explain why”.

〜から
When simply explaining why.
There are times when it is okay to use either, and times when it is more natural to use “〜んです.”

We often use “〜んです” when we want the other person to understand my feelings.

e.g.
A:おそかったですね

B:バスが来なかったんです
(Please understand my feelings…)

B:バスが来なかったからです
(I don’t have any feelings.)

Did my explanation enhance your understanding?

You can ask any questions like, “How do you say this in Japanese?”, “What’s the difference between these two words?” etc., in all lesson’s comment boxes.

I will explain it to you until you are satisfied.
