先生、
Why is 「食事(しょくじ)を食べました」 wrong?
I thought 「食事」has the meaning of “meal”.
Isn’t that right?

[Chika Sensei’s reply]
はい、そうです。
「食事」has the meaning of “meal”.
◎食事 meal [noun]
◎食事(を)する have a meal, dine
◎ごはん(meal, rice)を食べる have a meal
×食事を食べる is redundant and we usually don’t say so.
e.g.1
朝食(ちょうしょく) を食べる
朝(あさ)の食事をする
have a morning meal, eat breakfast
e.g.2
今日は家族と食事する
今日は家族とごはんを食べる
I am going to dine/eat with my family today
