縮約形 contraction、〜ちゃう、〜じゃう [JLPT grammar]

Even if you speak Japanese correctly, some words are hard to pronounce.

It’s the same for native Japanese speakers!

Then what do we do…?

We make those words easier to pronounce.😆

[Unnatural sentence]

昨日はあまり寝ていないから、今日は早く寝っちゃう。

-きのうはあまりねていないから、きょうははやくねっちゃう。

-I didn’t sleep much yesterday, so I’ll go to bed early today.

Can you find a mistake?

[Sensei’s correction]

昨日はあまり寝ていないから、今日は早く寝っちゃう。

→昨日はあまり寝ていないから、今日は早く寝ちゃおう

寝っちゃう→ ◎寝ちゃおう

Thus, the words are in contraction form for smooth pronunciation.

And, there are rules for making contractions.

<縮約形(しゅくやくけい) contraction>

寝る dictionary-form

てしまう(+てしまう; 完了(かんりょう) completion of action)

=寝ちゃう

てしまおう(+volitional)

=寝ちゃおう

飲(の)む dictionary-form

飲んでしまう(+てしまう; 完了(かんりょう) completion of action)

=飲んじゃう

飲んでしまおう(+volitional)

=飲んじゃおう

And… these may be used when speaking, but not when writing.

Contractions may be too casual and not polite.
