[JLPT grammar] “To follow the recipe exactly”, レシピどおり? レシピのように?
Today I am going to share the homework correction quoted from my JLPT N3 course!
The student’s sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?
[Student’s sentence]
レシピのように、ケーキを作りました。
*れしぴのように、けーきをつくりました。

[My correction]
レシピのように、ケーキを作りました。
→レシピどおり、ケーキを作りました。
I made the cake following the recipe.
〜どおりに indicates something in completely the same as was said, but 〜ように means in nearly the same as was said.
So, 〜ように can’t be used when something must be the exact same, like a recipe, you should use 〜どおりに in your sentence.
e.g.
◎時間(じかん)どおりに電車(でんしゃ)が出発(しゅっぱつ)しました。
The train departed on time.
(×時間のように電車が出発しました。)
◎マニュアルどおりに使(つか)えば動(うご)きます。
It works if used according to the manual.
(×マニュアルのように使えば動きます。)
I hope my explanation helps you. 😊
In the JLPT course, all lessons come with homework, if you submit your homework, I will reply with corrections.
I can break down the Japanese grammar and point out mistakes, explaining the structure and nuances of Japanese in an easy-to-understand way.
You can also ask me any questions as much as you want. I will teach you until you get it!
