The student’s sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

 

[Student’s sentence]

A: 明日、７時に学校に来てください。
B: わかります。

*A: あした、しちじにがっこうにきてください。

[My correction]

A: 明日、７時に学校に来てください。
B: わかります。
→B: わかりました。

A: Come to school tomorrow at 7:00.
B: Understood. / I got it.

 

You say わかりました when you understand the explanation or instruction that the other person has just given to you. You just learned something now.

If you say わかります in your sentence, it means “I already know that long ago.”

You should say わかりました because you didn’t know that you had to come to school tomorrow at 7:00 unless A told you.

 

e.g.

A: 先生(せんせい)、テストはいつですか。
B: 来週(らいしゅう)の月曜日(げつようび)ですよ。
A: そうですか、わかりました。
A: Sensei, when is the test?
B: Next Monday.
A: Okay, understood.

 

A: この問題(もんだい)はわかりますか。
B: はい、わかります。
A: Do you understand this question?
B: Yes, I do.
