Konnichiwa, it’s Chika Sensei.

Today, I’m sharing a homework correction from my JLPT Course. This one’s for beginners! Can you spot the mistake in the student’s sentence?

[Student’s sentence]

*A: eno, kono pen, tsukattemo ii desu ka.
B: ee, ii desu ne.

[My correction]

B: ee, ii desu yo.

A: Um, may I use this pen?
B: Sure, go ahead.

〜ね vs 〜よ

〜ね (ne) is used when confirming something or agreeing with someone. It shows agreement or checking if the other person feels the same.

e.g.

kyou wa samui desu ne.
It’s cold today, isn’t it?

〜よ (yo) is used when you are informing someone about something they might not know. It’s used to give information or permission to the listener.

e.g

kono hon, sugoku omoshiroi desu yo.
This book is really interesting (just so you know).

In this case, since you are letting the person know that it’s okay to use the pen, you should use “いいですよ” to give permission.

I hope this explanation helps! 😊
