Today, I’m sharing a homework correction from my JLPT Course. This one’s for intermediate learners! Can you spot the mistake in the student’s sentence?

 

 

[Student’s sentence]

 

あの店は安いどころか、味もすごくいいんだって。

*あのみせはやすいどころか、あじもすごくいいんだって。

[My correction]

 

あの店は安いどころか、味もすごくいいんだって。
→ あの店は安いばかりか、味もすごくいいんだって。
I heard that the food at that restaurant isn’t just cheap; it’s also really delicious.

 

 

どころか vs ばかりか

 

AどころかB: This expression strongly denies an expectation about A and says that B, which is completely different or even opposite, is true.

Example:

彼(かれ)は優(やさ)しいどころか、とても冷(つめ)たい人(ひと)です。
Far from being kind, he’s actually a very cold person.

 

AばかりかB: This expression means that A alone would be enough, but there’s even B in addition to that. It emphasizes the addition of something positive.

 

In this sentence, ばかりか is appropriate because it implies that the restaurant being cheap is already good, and on top of that, the food is also delicious.
