[Answer]
While I was out for a walk in the neighborhood, I stopped by the supermarket and bought some milk.
This expression means:
“Taking the opportunity to do B while doing A.”
“Since I’m already doing A, I’ll take advantage of it to do B too.”
In this sentence:
The main action (A) is going for a walk.
The secondary action (B) is buying milk at the supermarket.
Since going for a walk is the main event and buying milk is just an extra action, “ついでに” is the correct choice.
Other Choices:
“like” or “as if”.
e.g.
Play like a child.
“instead of” or “in place of”.
e.g.
Instead of going by car, I used the train.
“leaving as is” or “keeping the state”.
e.g.
Leave the window open.
These choices do not fit the context of the sentence.
I hope this explanation helps! 😊
