こんにちは、ちか先生です。

Konnichiwa, it’s Chika Sensei.

Today, I’m sharing a practice from my exclusive course.

This one’s for intermediate learners (JLPT N3)!

Can you choose the correct answer?

*あそこにたっているひとは、これからなにを(__)いるのですか。

[Answer]

あそこに立っている人は、これから何を(1 しようとして)いるのですか。

What is that person standing over there trying to do?

〜ようとする

= to be about to do / to try to do

→ Someone is just about to start an action, or is making an attempt.

How to make it:

Verb【volitional-form】+ とする

する dictionary-form

しよう volitional-form

しよう + とする

しようとしている(+〜ている grammar)

In this question:

「何をしようとしているのですか」 = “What are they trying to do?” or “What are they about to do?”

So, しようとして is the best choice.

Wrong choices:

2 しろとして

→ Not used in Japanese.

3 するとして

→ Assuming / supposing that ~

4 したとして

→ Even if ~ / Supposing you did ~

I hope this explanation helps! 😊
