[Answer]
遅れたのでタクシーに乗ったら、(1 かえって)時間がかかってしまった。
I was running late and took a taxi, but it ended up taking even longer.
かえって
= “on the contrary,” “instead,” “ended up worse.”
Use it when you take an action to improve a situation, but the result is the opposite and worse.
Breakdown:
Cause: 遅れた (I was late)
Action: タクシーに乗った (took a taxi)
Expected: arrive faster / save time
Actual: 時間がかかった (it took even longer) → bad result
So かえって is perfect here.
Other choices:
✖ 2 ところが
= “however / but then.”
Sentence-initial connector. Not used mid-sentence.
✖ 3 しかし
= “however / but.”
Sentence-initial connector. Not used mid-sentence.
✖ 4 だって
= Casual “because/but” at sentence start.
I hope this explanation helps! 😊
