Giving suggestions and advice 〜ほうがいい [JLPT grammar]

We use “〜ほうがいい” when we want to give advice.

This is useful grammar that is often used.

When using this grammar, be careful that the parts of speech and their conjugations are fixed.

日本は駐車料金が高いので、電車を利用ほうがいいです。

-にほんはちゅうしゃりょうきんがたかいので、でんしゃをりようほうがいいです。

-In Japan, parking fees are expensive, so you should take the train.

日本は駐車料金が高いので、電車を利用ほうがいいです。

→日本は駐車料金が高いので、電車を利用したほうがいいです。

 

When you want to give suggestions or advice, you should say…

ほうがいい You should…

V[ta-form]ほうがいい

 

利用 is a noun, so change it to a verb.

利用[noun]

利用する[verb]

利用した[ta-form]

利用した+ほうがいい

 

To say you shouldn’t do something, change the verb into its V[nai-form].

ないほうがいい You should not…

e.g.

車(くるま)を利用しないほうがいいです

You should not use your car.
