Don’t use ことがある and ときどき together [JLPT grammar]

Today, I share a video in which I corrected a student’s homework in my JLPT N4 course.

I give feedback in the course via chat, not video. I make videos with the most useful corrections.

Did you know that you cannot put ときどき and ことがある in one sentence?

I explained the reasons why.

[Unnatural sentence]

-I sometimes work on Sundays.

Can you find a mistake?

[Sensei’s correction]

Why can’t you say「日曜日にときどき働いたことがあります」?

〜たことがあります indicates whether you have experience.

But ときどき indicates you absolutely have experience.

Using 〜たことがあります and ときどき together is unnatural.

=経験(けいけん)があるか、ないか experienced or not

×ときどき sometimes

So, you should say,

ときどきV sometimes V

=いつもじゃないけど、たまに not always, but sometimes

Did my explanation enhance your understanding?

In the JLPT All-in-One course, I correct my students’ homework like this daily.

It is a good opportunity to notice mistakes you may be unaware of.

If your mistakes are left unchecked, your incorrect Japanese will become a habit and cannot easily be corrected.

Have a JLPT expert teacher you can access daily, and make your Japanese perfect!
