[JLPT grammar] つとめます = はたらきます? Or different meaning?

Today I am going to share the Q&A quoted from my JLPT N5 course!

[Question]

Sensei, つとめます = はたらきます? Or different meaning?
Please may you help me to understand the difference between  つとめます = はたらきます

[My Reply]

つとめます(勤めます)means “to be employed”, and the particle に is used to indicate your company name.

[company name]つとめる
ソニー(Sony)つとめる
○○銀行(ぎんこう bank)つとめる
市役所(しやくしょ city hall)つとめる

はたらきます(働きます)literally means “to work”, and the particle で is used to indicate the place/location where you work.

[the place where you work]はたらく
日本はたらく
とうきょうはたらく
○○銀行はたらく

If the location refers to a company name, both can be used.

I hope my answer helps you.😊
