[JLPT grammar] Can we make negative sentence for volitional form

Today I am going to share the Q&A quoted from my JLPT N4 course!

[Question]

Sensei,
is there negative sentence of
I think I will go back” ?

[My Reply]

You can say,

I think I will not go back to my country next year.

Volitional+と思う(e.g. 帰ろうと思う) has a negative form, but we rarely use it. This is probably because the original volitional expression means “let’s do…”, it’s only used if you do something.
Use つもり, which can be a negative sentence.

(I think I will go back)
(I think I will go back)
(I think I will not go back)

〜つもり indicates stronger determination and is not often used for everyday events.
It is a big decision for you not to return to your country, you can use it in your sentence.

I hope my answer helps you.😊

In the JLPT course, you can ask me any questions as much as you want.
I will teach you until you get it!
