[JLPT grammar] 私は日本に行くといいです→Incorrect

Today I am going to share the homework correction quoted from my JLPT N3 course!
The student’s sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student’s sentence]

私は来年日本に行くといいです。

*わたしはらいねんにほんにいくといいです。

[My correction]

私は来年日本に行くといいです。
→(私は)来年日本に行けるといいです。
I hope I can go to Japan next year.

行くといい means “I recommend you go”.
行けるといい means “I hope I will go”.

〜といい has two meanings, “hope, would be good if” and “recommend, good if you”.

If you want to use 〜といい for “your hope”, you cannot use words expressing your volition.
行く=your volition
行ける=your situation(potential-form)

Also, you can omit 私 since the sentence indicates that “the speaker’s hope”.

“hope”
日本でおいしいすしが食べられるといいなあ
I hope I can eat good sushi in Japan.

“recommend”
この薬(くすり)を飲(の)むといいですよ。すぐに治(なお)ります。
You should take this medicine, it will cure you quickly.

I hope it helps you.😊

In the JLPT course, all lessons come with homework, if you submit your homework, I will reply with corrections.
I can break down the Japanese grammar and point out mistakes, explaining the structure and nuances of Japanese in an easy-to-understand way.
You can also ask me any questions as much as you want. I will teach you until you get it!
