[JLPT grammar] Using 上手 to talk about oneself sounds boastful and is thus not used very often.

Today I am going to share the homework correction quoted from my JLPT N5 course!
The student’s sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student’s sentence]

私はサッカーが上手です。

*わたしはさっかーがじょうずです。

[My correction]

私はサッカーが上手です。
→私はサッカーがとくいです。
I’m good at soccer.

Using 上手 to talk about oneself sounds boastful and is thus not used very often.
When talking about oneself, とくい(得意) is used.

×私はサッカーが上手です。
田中(たなか)さんはサッカーが上手です
はサッカーがとくいです

e.g.
スミスさんは日本語(にほんご)が上手です
Smith-san speaks good Japanese.

私はケーキを作(つく)るのがとくいです
I am good at making cakes.

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊

In the JLPT course, all lessons come with homework, if you submit your homework, I will reply with corrections.
I can break down the Japanese grammar and point out mistakes, explaining the structure and nuances of Japanese in an easy-to-understand way.
You can also ask me any questions as much as you want. I will teach you until you get it!
