The student’s sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

明日から旅行なので、晴れてください。

*あしたからりょこうなので、はれてください。

[My correction]

明日から旅行なので、晴れてください。
→明日から旅行なので、晴れてほしい。
I’m traveling tomorrow, so I hope it’s sunny.

 

〜てください and 〜てほしい have different uses in Japanese. 〜てください is used when making a request to a person, while 〜てほしい is used to express a desire or hope, even about non-human subjects.
Since “weather” is not a person, we should use 〜てほしい in this sentence.

 

e.g.
◎早(はや)く桜(さくら)が咲(さ)いてほしい。
(×早く桜が咲いてください。)
I hope the cherry blossoms will bloom soon.

 

◎もう大(おお)きい地震(じしん)は起(お)こらないでほしい。
(×もう大きい地震は起こらないでください。)
I hope there will be no more big earthquakes.

 

◎これ以上(いじょう)、物価(ぶっか)が上(あ)がらないでほしい。
(×これ以上、物価が上がらないでください。)
I hope prices won’t go up anymore.
