My mother gave me a bag for my birthday.
Japanese has two verbs for giving. When a thing moves toward ‘me’, we use くれる. When a thing moves away from ‘me’, we use あげる.
In your sentence, since the bag moved toward you (‘me’ in the sentence), you should use
e.g.
I gave my father a watch for his birthday.
I fed the cat.
My boyfriend gave me these flowers.
My daughter gave me a letter.
I hope my explanation helps you. 😊
