行くと思う vs 行こうと思う(iku to omou vs ikou to omou) [JLPT grammar]
明日、ハイキングに行くと思っています。

→明日、ハイキングに行こうと思っています。
I think I am going hiking tomorrow.
When you use “dictionary-form + と思う,” it tells what others are doing. On the other hand, “volitional-form + と思う” indicates your own intention or will. In this case, you should use “volitional-form + と思う” because you’re expressing your thought about going hiking.
Examples:
来年(らいねん)は日本(にほん)に行く!
→来年は日本に行こうと思っています。
I think I will go to Japan next year.
新(あたら)しいスマホを買()う!
→新しいスマホを買おうと思っています。
I think I am going to buy a new phone.
