こんにちは、ちか先生です。

Konnichiwa, it’s Chika Sensei.

Today, I’m sharing a practice question for JLPT prep.

This one’s for pre-advanced learners (JLPT N2)!

Can you choose the correct answer?

[Practice Question]

恐怖(__)、彼女は動くこともできなかった。

*きょうふ(__)、かのじょはうごくこともできなかった。

1 なことに

2 に反して

3 のあまり

4 の末

[Answer]

恐怖(3 のあまり)、彼女は動くこともできなかった。

She was so terrified that she couldn’t even move.

〜(の)あまり

= “so ~ that…” / “because ~ was too strong”

It shows that because a feeling (or state) is too strong, a negative or unusual result happens.

Structure:

[Noun] + あまり

[Verb/Adjective] + あまり

In this sentence:

Reason: 恐怖 (terror) was too strong.

Result: 彼女は動くこともできなかった (she couldn’t even move).

Because 恐怖 is a noun and a strong emotion

恐怖あまり

That’s why のあまり is correct.

✖ Other Choices:

なことに

→Used like 「驚いたことに」 ( to my surprise).

It doesn’t fit the grammar here.

に反して

→Means “contrary to ~” or “against ~”.

の末

→Means “after a long time of ~” or “at the end of ~”.

I hope this explanation helps! 😊
