In my youth, I was captivated by the English-dubbed series “Sailor Moon,” where I first encountered the enchanting Japanese ending theme, “Heart Moving.” This initial exposure ignited my passion for the Japanese language, prompting me to embark on my own informal studies around the age of twelve, primarily through textbooks or by watching subbed anime in Japanese. However, as a young learner navigating this journey alone, my progress was limited. After completing my college education in Nursing, I enrolled in Japanese courses at the Japan-America Society of Houston (JASH), which provided a solid foundation for my language skills. Unfortunately, my travel-nursing career necessitated a pause in my formal education. Nevertheless, I seized the opportunity to attend short courses at the International Institute of Tokyo and Sun Academy during my travels in Japan. Upon returning to self-study, I found it challenging to maintain the discipline and consistency required for effective learning, especially as a busy professional with numerous obligations that often overshadow my passion for language study. Chika Sensei’s speaking course has proven to be an ideal solution for someone like me, who cannot commit to a fixed in-person class schedule. The flexibility to study Japanese from anywhere in the world aligns perfectly with my frequent travels between California, Hawaii, Japan, and Korea.
