[JLPT grammar] What’s the difference between 食べています and 食べているところです?

Today I am going to share the Q&A quoted from my JLPT N5 course!

[Question]

Sensei,
What’s the difference between 食べています and 食べているところです?
Both describe an ongoing action…

[My Reply]

食べています
=わたしは、今(いま)、食べています。
It just describes an action in progress.

食べているところです
=今、食べていますから、ちょっとまってください。
It includes the feeling that it’s in progress now, so wait a minute. It emphasizes the progression of actions.
It is often used when we want to explain its condition.

e.g.
A: そろそろ行きましょうか。
B: 今ランチを食べているころなんです。10分待(ま)ってください。
A: Shall we get going?
B: I’m having lunch right now.  Please wait 10 minutes

I hope my answer helps you.😊

In the JLPT course, you can ask me any questions as much as you want.
