Konnichiwa, it’s Chika Sensei.

Today, I’m sharing a practice question for JLPT prep.

This one’s for pre-advanced learners (JLPT N2)!

Can you choose the correct answer?

[Practice Question]

[Answer]

I’ve lived here for ten years now, so this country is, so to speak, like my second home.

いわば

= “so to speak” / “in other words” / “you could say”

It is used when you compare something using a metaphor.

In this sentence:

The speaker has lived in this country for 10 years.

→ It’s not literally their hometown.

→ But it feels like a second home.

So, いわば is the perfect fit here.

✖ Other choices:

= “for example”

さらば

= “farewell” (old-fashioned word)

ならば

= “if that’s the case”, “if so”

I hope this explanation helps! 😊
