This one’s for upper beginners (JLPT N4)!
Can you choose the correct answer?

ふとんを（＿＿）寝たら、かぜをひいてしまいました。
*ふとんを（＿＿）ねたら、かぜをひいてしまいました。
1 かけなかった
2 かけないで
3 かけないと
4 かけなければ

ふとんを（2 かけないで）寝たら、かぜをひいてしまいました。
I slept without a blanket and caught a cold.
〜ないで
= “without doing ~”
It connects two actions.
The first action (in ないで form) was not done.
Action 1 (not done):
ふとんをかける (put on a blanket)
Action 2 (done):
寝た (slept)
We need to show how you slept:
“without putting on a blanket.”
かける dictionary-form
かけない nai-form
かけないで
→ ふとんをかけないで寝た
(I slept without putting on a blanket)
So, かけないで is the best choice.
Other Choices:
1. かけなかった
3. かけないと
4. かけなければ
These three options cannot connect to 寝た in this way.
