Today, I’m sharing a homework correction from my JLPT Course. This one’s for beginners! Can you spot the mistake in the student’s sentence?

 

[Student’s sentence]

 

家の前に、見ることがない犬がいました。

*いえのまえに、みることがないいぬがいました。

ie no mae ni, miru koto ga nai inu ga imashita.

[My correction]

 

家の前に、見ることがない犬がいました。
→家の前に、見たことがない犬がいました。

ie no mae ni, mita koto ga nai inu ga imashita.

There was a dog in front of the house that I had never seen before.

 

〜(る)ことがない vs 〜(た)ことがない

– “(verb dictionary-form)ことがない” means “there is no chance or habit of doing something.”
– “(verb ta-form)ことがない” means “you have never done something (no experience).”

In this case, you want to say that you’ve never seen this dog before (no experience), so the correct sentence should be: 見たことがない犬.

 

 

Example sentences:

田中さんに会ったことがありません。

Tanaka san ni atta koto ga arimasen.

I have never met Tanaka-san.

​

田中さんは会社を辞めたので、最近は会うことがありません。

tanaka san wa kaisha o yameta node, saikin wa au koto ga arimasen.

Tanaka-san quit the company, I no longer have the chance to meet him.
