Today, I’m sharing a homework correction from my JLPT Course. This one’s for intermediate learners! Can you spot the mistake in the student’s sentence?

 

[Student’s sentence]

 

12月から2月まで、この地域では雪が降ることが多いです。

*12がつから2がつまで、このちいきではゆきがふることがおおいです。

[My correction]

 

12月から2月まで、この地域では雪が降ることが多いです。

→12月から2月にかけて、この地域では雪が降ることが多いです。

It often snows in this area from around December to around the end of February.

 

 

〜から〜まで vs 〜から〜にかけて

 

〜から〜まで:

This indicates a clear and specific range, like “from December 1st to February 28th” (not including March 1st).

 

〜から〜にかけて:

This indicates a rough range, like “from around December to around the end of February.”

Since the period when it snows cannot be clearly specified, 〜にかけて is more appropriate here.

 

 

Example sentences:

 

九州から四国にかけて、台風の被害が出ています。

きゅうしゅうからしこくにかけて、たいふうのひがいがでています。

The typhoon has caused damage from Kyushu to Shikoku.

 

午後5時から7時にかけて、この道路は渋滞します。

ごご５じから７じにかけて、このどうろはじゅうたいします。

This road is congested between 5pm and 7pm.
