[JLPT N2] There’s a better word than さらに if you want to say ‘And, what’s worse’

Today, I’m sharing a homework correction from my JLPT Course. This one’s for intermediate learners! Can you spot the mistake in the student’s sentence?
[Student’s sentence]
彼にひどいことを言われた。さらにみんなの前で。
*かれにひどいことをいわれた。さらにみんなのまえで。

[My correction]
彼にひどいことを言われた。さらにみんなの前で。
→ 彼にひどいことを言われた。しかもみんなの前で。
He said something terrible to me. And, what’s worse, in front of everyone!
さらに vs しかも
AさらにB is used when you want to add something extra, like “not only A, but also B.” It’s common when giving additional information.
AしかもB is used when you want to emphasize how surprising or important B is, especially when B makes A even more significant.
In this sentence, you want to emphasize how bad the situation is, you should use しかも.
Example sentences:
来週漢字のテストがある。さらに、日本語の会話のテストもある。
らいしゅうかんじのテストがある。さらに、にほんごのかいわのテストもある。
There will be a kanji test next week. And, there’s also a Japanese conversation test.
来週漢字のテストがある。しかも、N1レベルの！
らいしゅうかんじのテストがある。しかも、N1レベルの！
There will be a kanji test next week. And, it’s at the N1 level!
