Today, I’m sharing a practice from my exclusive course. This one’s for upper beginners (JLPT N4)! Can you answer correctly?

 

 

[Practice Question]

 

仕事が少ない日は（＿＿）早く帰るようにしています。

*しごとがすくないひは（＿＿）はやくかえるようにしています。

[My correction]

 

仕事が少ない日は（4 なるべく）早く帰るようにしています。

On days when I have little work, I try to go home as soon as possible.

 

 

なるべく means “as much as possible” or “trying,” similar to できるだけ.

This sentence describes days when there isn’t much work, and the speaker wants to leave early instead of staying at the office. Therefore, なるべく is the best choice here.

なるべく早く = as soon (or early) as possible

 

 

Other Choices:

なかなか

Used with negative forms, meaning “hardly” or “difficult to ~.”

e.g.

なかなか帰れない。

I can hardly go home.

 

とうとう

Used to express “finally” or “at last” after waiting for something.

e.g.

とうとう雨(あめ)がやんだ。

Finally, the rain stopped.

 

ぜんぜん

Usually paired with negative verbs, meaning “not at all.

e.g.

昨日(きのう)はぜんぜん眠(ねむ)れなかった。
