こんにちは、ちか先生です。

Konnichiwa, it’s Chika Sensei.

Today, I’m sharing a practice from my exclusive course.

This one’s for intermediate learners (JLPT N3)!

Can you choose the correct answer?

[Practice Question]

このケーキ、100円(__)おいしいね。

*このケーキ、100えん(__)おいしいね。

1 くせに

2 のわりに

3 なんか

4 もんだ

[Answer]

このケーキ、100円(2 のわりに)おいしいね。

This cake tastes pretty good for just 100 yen.

〜のわりに

“for ~” / “even though ~”

It means: different from what was expected based on ~.

Structure:

[noun]わりに

100円わりに

In this sentence:

100円 is very cheap, so you might not expect it to taste that good.

But it’s actually tasty!

That’s why のわりに is the best choice.

Other choices:

くせに

= “even though ~”

Used when expressing a feeling of criticism or blame.

Structure:

[noun]の+くせに

◎100円くせに

×100円くせに

なんか

= “things like ~” / shows something is unimportant

もんだ

= Means “because ~” (casual, often used by children)

Usually used at end of a sentence.

I hope this explanation helps! 😊
