[Answer]
申し訳ない(1 ことに)、お借りしていた本を汚してしまいました。
To my great regret, I ended up staining the book I borrowed.
〜ことに
= “It is very ~ that…” / “To my ~ (emotion)”
(emphasizes the speaker’s feelings)
Structure:
[Emotion adjective] + ことに
Common combinations:
残念(ざんねん)なことに
=Unfortunately / To my regret
うれしいことに
=To my joy / Happily
驚(おどろ)いたことに
=To my surprise
困(こま)ったことに
=The trouble is…
In this sentence;
申し訳ないことに
= “I am very sorry to say this, but…” / “Regrettably…”
So, ことに is the best choice.
✖ Other Choices:
2 (〜た)ところ
= “when I did ~” (result)
3 〜どころか
= “far from ~ / actually ~ instead”
4 〜末に
= “after doing ~ for a long time, finally ~”
I hope this explanation helps! 😊
