[JLPT grammar] Can we make negative sentence for volitional formと思う?

Today I am going to share the Q&A quoted from my JLPT N4 course!

is there negative sentence of
帰ろうと思います “I think I will go back” ?

[My Reply]

You can say,

I think I will not go back to my country next year.

Volitional+と思う(e.g. 帰ろうと思う) has a negative form, but we rarely use it. This is probably because the original volitional expression means “let’s do…”, it’s only used if you do something.
Use つもり, which can be a negative sentence.

◎帰ろうと思います。(I think I will go back)
?帰ろうと思いません (???)
◎帰るつもりです。(I think I will go back)
◎帰らないつもりです。(I think I will not go back)

〜つもり indicates stronger determination and is not often used for everyday events.
It is a big decision for you not to return to your country, you can use it in your sentence.

I hope my answer helps you.😊
