I can’t figure out when to use から instead of に when the verb is もらいます.

Basically, there is no big difference between the two particles から/に in もらいます sentence.
To be exact, に is used only with people, and から is used with organizations.

×がっこうに本(ほん)をもらいました。
◎がっこうから本をもらいました。
I got the book from the school.

For people, we can use both.
◎先生(せんせい)に本をもらいました。
◎先生(せんせい)から本をもらいました。
I got the book from my teacher.

Use から with がっこう(school)、かいしゃ(company)、グループの名前(group name), etc.
