[Q&A] What’s the difference between 寝たい and 眠い?

Today I am going to share the Q&A quoted from my JLPT N4 course!

 

[Question]

先生、

寝(ね)たいです。
眠(ねむ)いです。

なにがちがいますか。
What is the difference?

 

[My Reply]

寝たいです。
I want to sleep
寝る verb “sleep”

眠(ねむ)いです。
I’m sleepy, I feel sleepy.
眠い i-adjective “sleepy”

e.g.
今日(きょう)は11時(じ)に寝たいです。
I want to go to bed at 11pm today.
(Lit. I want to sleep at 11pm today. )

昨日(きのう)3時間しか寝ませんでしたから、眠いです。
I am sleepy because I slept only 3 hours yesterday.
